The Panasonic ER-GB40-S is a beard trimmer that has been on the market since around 2013, yet it’s still widely available today. While many trimmers from that era have long disappeared, this model continues to attract buyers.
After using it thoroughly, I found it stands out for its build quality, ergonomic design, and consistent trimming performance, but it also shows its age in a few important areas. So, after more than a decade, is the Panasonic ER-GB40 still worth buying, or has it become an outdated choice? Let’s find out.

One feature that still feels thoughtful is the dedicated charging stand. Instead of plugging the cable directly into the trimmer, the stand stays connected to the power outlet, and you need to simply place the trimmer upright to start charging. It keeps the setup tidy, secure, and makes storing the trimmer between uses much more convenient.
45° Hypoallergenic Blades: The Panasonic ER-GB40-S comes with 45° Japanese hypoallergenic stainless steel blades, designed to maintain a sharp cutting edge for precise trimming. Despite its decade-old design, Panasonic equipped this trimmer with its signature blade technology. The hypoallergenic blades are also designed to provide a comfortable trimming experience across different beard and hair types.

Wet & Dry Trimming: The Panasonic ER-GB40-S supports both wet and dry trimming, that gives you some flexibility in how you groom. Its waterproof design allows you to rinse the trimmer under running water and use it in the shower, which makes cleanup particularly convenient. Wet trimming can also be useful when you prefer to groom with shaving cream or gel, while dry trimming is generally quicker and more practical for everyday touch-ups. However, keep in mind that wet use isn’t necessarily better for everyone, it mainly comes down to your preferred grooming routine.
Zoom Wheel Length Adjustment:
The Panasonic ER-GB40 uses a Zoom Wheel adjustment system that lets you select trimming lengths from 1mm to 10mm in 0.5mm incremental steps. Instead of swapping between multiple combs, you can simply twist the wheel to move the attached comb up or down and set your desired length. It makes length adjustments quick and straightforward, although the fixed comb design means you’re still limited to the available 1–10 mm range.
Battery & Charging: The Panasonic ER-GB40-S is powered by a rechargeable battery that provides up to 50 minutes of cordless runtime on a full charge. The main downside is the charging time; it takes around 15 hours to fully recharge, which feels particularly slow by today’s standards. For occasional grooming, this may not be a major issue, but frequent users will need to plan ahead and keep the trimmer charged.

My Personal Experience
I’ve used quite a few beard trimmers over the years, and if someone asked me to pick my favorite design, the Panasonic ER-GB40 would definitely be one of them. Along with the Panasonic ER-GB42-K (the newer version), it has one of the cleanest and most elegant designs I’ve used. It looks simple, feels premium, and the rubberized grip makes it very secure to hold even with wet hands. I also went through plenty of customer reviews, and build quality is one thing very few people seem to complain about.
The biggest reason this trimmer impressed me is its 45° Japanese hypoallergenic blades. They stay sharp and cut through short stubble, thick beards, and even longer facial hair without much effort. Panasonic clearly didn’t cut corners on the blade quality, and that’s something I noticed from the first few trims. The cutting feels smooth and consistent rather than aggressive.
Where I did struggle a little was precision work. Since there’s no separate detail trimmer, I had to use the main blade for shaping my mustache and trimming around the lip line. It’s certainly possible, but it isn’t as effortless as Panasonic’s higher-end models like the ER-GB96-K, which offer built-in precision trimming.
The Zoom Wheel is another feature I genuinely enjoyed using. Instead of changing multiple guards, I could simply twist the wheel to switch between 18 length settings from 1–10 mm. It makes everyday beard maintenance much quicker. For a close stubble, removing the comb gives a 0.5 mm trim, although I did feel limited whenever I wanted to keep a beard longer than 10 mm. In that case, a separate barber comb becomes almost essential.
Battery performance is probably the weakest part of the ER-GB40-S trimmer. In my regular use, I got around 45-50 minutes of cordless runtime, which was enough for several grooming sessions, but the 15-hour charging time felt noticeably outdated. I’ve tested competitors in a similar price range that charge much faster and offer longer backup. Another small annoyance is the charging system, the charging dock has a red charging indicator, but there’s no indication when the battery is fully charged, and there’s no battery level display either. Most of the time, I simply left it charging overnight.
Cleaning, on the other hand, is effortless. The trimmer is fully waterproof, so I could rinse it directly under running water after every shave or use it for wet trimming in the shower without any concerns.
My experience was positive, but not perfect. The ER-GB40 gets the essentials right with excellent blade quality, premium build, and comfortable handling. Its dated battery experience and lack of precision trimming are real compromises.
One more thing to consider is its newer sibling, the Panasonic ER-GB42-K. It keeps essentially the same design and core technology, with the main difference being the color combination. More importantly, the newer model improves the charging time, taking around 8 hours for a full charge instead of the ER-GB40-S’s 15 hours, while offering a similar cordless runtime.
Since the ER-GB40-S is available at around twice the price of the newer ER-GB42-K, I personally don’t think the older model makes much sense from a value perspective. Unless you specifically prefer its blue-and-silver color combination, the newer black ER-GB42-K seems like the more practical choice, especially with its shorter charging time and essentially identical battery backup.
Verdict
The Panasonic ER-GB40-S left me with a mostly positive but somewhat mixed impression. Its biggest strengths are still easy to appreciate: the clean ergonomic design, solid build quality, comfortable grip, and sharp 45° Japanese blades give it a more premium feel than you might expect from its age. Its trimming performance is easily the strongest part of the package, and the Zoom Wheel also makes everyday length adjustments simple.
But the trimmer’s age becomes more obvious in a few areas. The 15-hour charging time, roughly 45–50 minutes of real-world cordless runtime, and lack of a battery-level indicator feel dated compared with newer options. The absence of a dedicated detail trimmer also makes mustache and lip-line shaping less convenient.
I’d recommend the ER-GB40-S primarily to someone who values build quality, comfortable handling, and dependable trimming performance over modern features. It remains a capable trimmer, but its value becomes harder to justify when you consider its newer sibling, the Panasonic ER-GB42-K. The ER-GB42-K keeps essentially the same design and core technology while improving the charging time to around 8 hours, compared with 15 hours on the ER-GB40-S, while delivering a similar battery runtime. If the ER-GB40-S costs nearly twice as much, I don’t see a strong reason to choose the older model unless you specifically prefer its blue-and-silver finish. For most buyers, the newer black ER-GB42-K is the more sensible choice and offers better value without giving up the qualities that make the ER-GB40-S appealing.
