So, the choice mainly comes down to convenience: the ES-LV97-K costs more but takes care of cleaning and charging automatically, while the ES-LV67-K costs less if you’re comfortable cleaning and charging the shaver manually.
My Personal Experience After Testing Every Arc5 Generation
Insights and other sections tell you what Panasonic claims or generally people know. This section is about what I actually experienced after using and comparing every major Panasonic Arc5 generation, including the latest ES-LV97-K, ES-LV97-K and the previous-generation ES-LV65-S, ES-LV65-S.
If you’re deciding whether the Arc5 is worth buying, or whether the newer models are worth upgrading to, this is the section I’d read first.
Design:
The first thing I noticed wasn’t the shaving performance, it was the design.
The newer Arc5 feels slimmer, longer, and more ergonomic than the older ES-LV65-S. Both are solidly built, but the newer handle sits more naturally in my hand and feels easier to control during longer shaving sessions. I also prefer the matte finish of the latest models over the older silver-and-black design, although that’s largely a matter of taste.
Shaving Performance:
The five-blade system isn’t just a marketing feature, I found it genuinely reduces the number of passes needed on short stubble.
On a 1-day beard, the Arc5 usually cleared everything in a single pass, with only occasional touch-ups around the jawline. A 2-day beard was similarly effortless, and the sharp 30° blades handled my dense facial hair without leaving noticeable patches.
I was equally impressed by its wet shaving performance. With shaving foam or gel, the cutting efficiency stayed almost identical to dry shaving. Some lower-powered foil shavers tend to lose momentum when shaving through thicker cream, but I didn’t experience that with the Arc5.
The story changes once the beard becomes longer.
On 3-day stubble, I usually needed a second pass, although I never experienced pulling or tugging. Beyond that, the Arc5 becomes less efficient because the foil openings struggle to capture longer hairs consistently. If you normally shave once or twice a week, I recommend trimming the beard first with a dedicated trimmer before using the Arc5.
My takeaway: The Arc5 excels on daily and every-other-day shaving, but it isn’t the ideal foil shaver for long, overgrown stubble.
16D Pivoting Head:
Useful, but Less Dramatic Than It Sounds
Panasonic heavily promotes the 16D pivoting head, but in real use I couldn’t distinguish all 16 directions individually, and I don’t think most users will.
What I did notice is that the head moves naturally in multiple directions, while the five foil elements also flex independently against the skin. Those flexible foils contribute more to comfort than the headline number itself.
The only limitation is size. Because the Arc5 has a large shaving head, its movement feels less obvious than Braun’s premium models. In my experience, the Braun Series 9 follows facial contours a little more naturally, while the Arc5 counters with a very smooth and stable glide.
The Beard Sensor:
This was the feature I noticed the least.
Panasonic says the sensor adjusts power based on beard density, and technically it does. I could hear the motor reduce its output slightly when the shaver wasn’t touching my face, and it occasionally varied during lighter beard areas.
In practice, though, the difference is subtle. The Arc5 spends most of its time operating at high power, so I wouldn’t consider the beard sensor a feature you’ll actively notice during every shave.
The Head Lock:
Every Arc5 includes a head lock, activated by the rear slide switch.
I used it mainly around the mustache, under the nose, and along beard lines where a fixed head offers better control. Panasonic only provides one straight locking position, while Braun offers five different angles.

The problem is the competition. Premium shavers like the Braun Series 9 Pro and Philips’ high-end models now offer 60 minutes, yet Panasonic hasn’t increased the Arc5’s capacity despite multiple revisions even in Arc6. My guess is that the powerful linear motor consumes more energy, but regardless of the reason, I’d still like to see a larger battery in future models.
Cleaning Dock:
Worth the Extra Money?
I tested both the solo version and cleaning dock version, and the dock is undeniably more convenient.
Drop the shaver head in, press the button, and it cleans, dries, and charges automatically. What I like most is the long-term running cost, Panasonic’s cleaning sachets are generally much cheaper than Braun’s replacement cartridges.
That said, I wouldn’t call the dock essential. Since the Arc5 is fully washable, the ES-LV67-K is still an excellent choice if you’re happy rinsing the shaver manually. The price difference between the two models is often small enough that I’d lean toward the ES-LV97-K whenever it’s reasonably priced.
My Thought:
I think Arc5’s biggest strength is speed on short stubble. It consistently delivers a close, comfortable shave on 1–2 day beards, and its cutting performance remains strong whether I shave dry or with foam or gel.
Its weaknesses are equally clear. The large shaving head is less agile than some competitors in tight areas, the 45-minute battery feels dated for a premium shaver, and longer 3+ day stubble is better trimmed first with a dedicated beard trimmer. My experience with the Arc5 has been overwhelmingly positive. Rather than trying to excel at every grooming scenario, it performs best as a high-performance daily or every-other-day foil shaver, and that’s exactly where it earns its reputation.
Panasonic Arc5 New vs. Old: What’s Actually Different?
One of the most common questions I see is whether the new Panasonic Arc5 models are worth upgrading to. After using Arc5’s both the latest Panasonic ES-LV67-K, ES-LV97-K and the previous-generation ES-LV65-S, I found that Panasonic refined the Arc5 rather than completely redesigning it.
The core shaving performance is almost identical
The first thing to know is that both generations shave remarkably similarly. They share Panasonic’s 30° Japanese stainless steel blades, the same 14,000 CPM linear motor, and the same overall five-blade cutting system.
In practical use, I didn’t notice a meaningful difference in closeness or cutting power. If your older Arc5 still has healthy blades and foils, you’re not upgrading for dramatically better shaving performance alone.
The newer design feels more ergonomic
Where I noticed the biggest improvement was the overall design.
The newer Arc5 has a slimmer shaving head, a longer handle, and a matte finish that gives it a more modern look. More importantly, it fits my hand better and feels easier to control during longer shaving sessions. The older model isn’t uncomfortable, but it definitely feels bulkier in comparison.
16D pivoting head is the main hardware upgrade
The latest Arc5 introduces Panasonic’s 16D pivoting head, replacing the previous flexible head design.
In real-world use, I wouldn’t say the difference is dramatic. The newer head follows facial contours a little more naturally, but the improvement comes more from the slimmer head and flexible foils than from the advertised “16 directions” itself. Both generations remain comfortable shavers.
The display and travel lock go in different directions
Not every update felt like an upgrade to me.
The newer models use a redesigned LED display, but I actually found the older display slightly easier to read at a glance. Panasonic also replaced the physical travel-lock switch with an electronic lock that activates by holding the power button for several seconds.
Neither approach is better objectively, it simply depends on whether you prefer dedicated physical controls or a cleaner exterior design.
Should you upgrade?
If you already own a previous-generation Arc5, don’t expect a huge jump in shaving performance. The newer models mainly improve ergonomics, styling, and the shaving-head design rather than the core cutting ability. If you’re buying your first Arc5, I’d lean toward the newer generation because the price difference is often reasonable. But if you find an older Arc5 at a significant discount, you’re sacrificing surprisingly little in actual shaving performance.
Verdict
After comparing every Arc5 generation and and considering every aspect of both the latest and previous models, I think the Panasonic Arc5 remains one of the strongest premium foil shavers you can buy, but for a very specific type of user.
Its biggest strengths are the exceptionally close shave, fast five-blade cutting system, and consistent performance on daily or every-other-day stubble. Whether used dry or with shaving foam, the Arc5 delivers the kind of shaving efficiency that has kept it relevant even after the newer Arc6 arrived.
That doesn’t mean it’s perfect. The shaving head is still larger than many competitors, the 45-minute battery now trails other premium models, and it isn’t the best choice for shaving long 3+ day growth without trimming first.
If your priority is the closest possible foil shave, the Arc5 is still one of the best values in the premium category. If comfort and contour-following matter more than outright closeness, the Braun Series 9 or Philips i9000 Prestige may suit you better. I don’t think the Arc5 is the newest premium shaver anymore, but I do think it’s still one of the smartest premium buys for anyone who wants a close, efficient foil shave without paying the highest flagship price.
Which Arc5 Model Should You Buy?
Buy the Panasonic ES-LV67-K if you want the latest Arc5 performance at the lower price and don’t mind rinsing the shaver manually.
Buy the Panasonic ES-LV97-K if you value the convenience of the automatic cleaning and charging dock—the shaving performance is the same, but the maintenance experience is more effortless.
Buy the Panasonic ES-LV65-S if you find it at a significantly lower price and want nearly the same core shaving performance as the newer Arc5 models without paying for the latest design refinements. And you personally like the older design.
